Charlton Ath v Stevenage preview
Charlton Ath v Stevenage preview

The ‘Football For A Fiver’ initiative has really caught the imagination with an attendance of close to 24,000 guaranteed by close of business on Thursday.

Charlton will also remember fans who have passed away during the past year prior to kick-off. The idea was pioneered by Ben Hayes during his time as Fans’ Director and tomorrow will be especially poignant for Ben, as his father, George, will be one of those remembered this year.

Pre-match entertainment will be provided by soprano and Charlton fan, Victoria Stanyon. Victoria took The Valley by storm back in September with her version of ‘Jerusalem’ and a unique rendition of ‘Valley Floyd Road’. The Addicks went on to beat Chesterfield 3-1 that day, so hopefully Victoria’s talismanic qualities are still intact. She’s looking forward to performing at The Valley again, but what will she be singing and what has she been doing since her last visit?:

“I am so glad to be singing again this weekend. I have chosen some famous and very passionate Puccini that hopefully lots of people will recognise and I am of course singing our club song.

“I really hope the crowd respond well to the music and it helps to create the positive and productive energy necessary for a win.

“The end of last year was a special time for me in my career. After realising my dream of singing at the Valley, I then sang the role of Cio-cio San (Madama Butterfly) for the first time. It was an immense few months.

“Since then I toured with The Little Opera Company. They are a talented and energetic group of young performers that are keen to share their passion for opera with the wider audience. They perform excerpts from all of the best-loved operas. Working with them was an absolute hoot and I hope to be involved with their summer programme.

“I haven’t quite decided upon my next major role….possibly Mimi (La Boheme),” said Victoria.

Big crowds bring their own pressures to performers in any field but big occasions are what professionals thrive on. Victoria is guaranteed to lift the crowd’s spirits ahead of the game and that positivity will hopefully be transmitted to the the players.

Stevenage are difficult opponents to beat with their all action style and Tuesday’s defeat at Meadow Lane was only their second in the last 22 games. They have a glamour FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane to look forward to next week and Chris Powell will be looking to expose any subconscious lack of concentration by the visitors.

The side will be more balanced than the lopsided team that started against Rochdale on Tuesday. Chris Solly has recovered from the illness that sidelined him close to kick-off and influential skipper, Johnnie Jackson, has recovered from his achilles strain.

Danny Haynes’ hamstring injury will keep him out so Bradley Wright-Phillips will probably continue to partner Yann Kermorgant in attack. Jackson’s recovery will allow Danny Green to revert to the right and Powell will have to decide which of his two central midfielders to play in the more advanced role.

Charlton could line-up like this:

Hamer; Solly, Taylor, Morrison, Wiggins; Green, Stephens, Hollands, Jackson; Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips.

Subs: Sullivan, Cort, Pritchard, Wagstaff, Clarke.

The referee will be Craig Pawson from South Yorkshire.

Stevenage have over achieved this season and withstood the departure of charismatic manager, Graham Westley, well. They can be proud of their achievements and inflicted the first defeat of the season on the Addicks in mid-October.

However, the Addicks have an excellent record against the divisions top clubs and, despite their recent stuttering form, Powell will be disappointed if his team does not avenge that defeat at the Lamex.
