Following two poor performances, and three defeats in a row, Charlton will be anxious to arrest their slide and turn their season around.
Chris Powell has injury worries ahead of the visit of Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, and will be pondering his game plan as well.
Powell’s containment policy has floundered on his side’s chronic inability to keep a clean sheet. The injuries may force his hand a little and the manager may start with a 4-4-2 shape.
Forest are flying and their victory over bitter rivals Derby County on Saturday, was followed by the Rams parting company with long term manager, Nigel Clough.
Billy Davies’ side has plenty of creativity with the likes of Chris Cohen, Henri Lansbury and former Charlton midfielder, Andy Reid, in its ranks.
Sky are reporting that the Addicks will be without Chris Solly, Leon Cort, Johnnie Jackson, Bradley Pritchard and Yann Kermorgant, though there has to be some chance that Pritchard and Kermorgant could figure.
Kermorgant was – perhaps foolishly – introduced late on at Burnley and finished the game limping. The Frenchman is pivotal to Powell’s plans but rushing him back too soon could backfire on the manager.
Powell will probably go with Saturday’s back four of Lawrie Wilson, Michael Morrison, Dorian Dervite and Rhoys Wiggins in front of keeper Ben Hamer.
Powell said in his post-match press conference at Burnley that the team needed to get back to basics. Deploying players in their correct positions fits that mantra and if Pritchard is declared unfit, Cameron Stewart could start on the right with fellow wideman, Callum Harriott, returning on the left. Jordan Cousins is likely to partner either Dale Stephens or Mark Gower in the middle of the park.
It is hard to see how Kermorgant could be fit to start and he could even be ruled out completely. Joe Pigott struggled at Watford and against Millwall, so Marvin Sordell could come in to partner Simon Church up front. Sordell needs game time to attain full match sharpness.
Powell could field this team:
Hamer; Wilson, Dervite, Morrison, Wiggins; Stewart, Cousins, Stephens, Harriott; Church, Sordell.
Subs: Alnwick, Evina, Wood, Gower, Hughes, Pigott, Kermorgant.
Fred Graham from Essex will be the man in charge.
Forest are not unbeatable, but to get something from the game, the Addicks will need to be more imaginative and expansive than normal.
It is another tough match for Powell’s beleaguered troops and they will have to show character, as well as ability, if they are to get the desired result.
