Carlisle manager, Greg Abbott, will be keen for his side to give a better account of themselves than they did in their 4-0 defeat in the league game at The Valley.
Abbott is likely to field as strong a side as possible in a bid to progress to the luctative third round.
Charlton have other priorities of course but ‘honourable defeat’ at the home of a Premier League giant – as was the case at Tottenham last season – would probably tick all the boxes.
Chris Powell will want to get some competitive game time into some of his fringe players without upsetting the balance of the team too much. Players such as Bradley Wright-Phillips and Yann Kermorgant are unlikely to be risked, though Wright-Phillips may again be on the bench,’just in case’.
John Sullivan is likely to take over from Ben Hamer in goal with Leon Cort and Cedric Evina possibly coming in for Michael Morrison and Rhoys Wiggins.
In midfield, Scott Wagstaff is likely to start on the right with on loan Darel Russel – if fit – partnering either Hughes or Hollands in the middle. Bradley Pritchard may have to be content with a place on the bench while Mikel Alonso still has his back problem. Johnnie Jackson is not yet fit and QPR have not given Hogan Ephraim clearance to play, so it may be an opportunity for Ruben Bover or Callum Harriott to step up.
Paul Hayes will start up front and it would be good to see Paul Benson given a game but Powell seems reluctant to use the former Dagenham player. The manager may opt for Jason Euell as Hayes’ partner.
Seven substitutes can be named in this competition and Powell may choose some of his senior players to provide back up. The team could look like this:
Sullivan; Solly, Taylor, Cort, Evina; Wagstaff, Hughes, Russell, Bover; Hayes, Euell.
Subs, Hamer, Morrison, Doherty, Pritchard, Hollands, Smith, Wright-Phillips.
The referee will be Andrew Madley from West Yorkshire.
Charlton will be strongly fancied to continue their recent excellent form and progress to the third round.
