Saturday will mark the fifth anniversary of Chris Powell bowing out as a player at The Valley.
On an afternoon filled with emotion, the cult hero replaced Jonjo Shelvey in the 84th minute and scored two minutes later, to seal an emphatic 4-1 win over Coventry.
Shelvey was given his debut by Alan Pardew at Barnsley a week earlier. Shelvey started that game alongside Matt Holland and Jose Semedo to become Charlton’s youngest ever player. The prodigious 16-year-old had a fine game and was the Addicks star man.
Midway through the second half, Pardew gave another of his talented youngsters their first taste of senior football when Scott Wagstaff came on for Semedo. Wagstaff came on for Jerome Thomas in that Coventry game a week later.
Since then Wagstaff, now the club’s longest serving player, has gone on to make a total of 140 appearances in all competitions for Charlton, scoring 22 goals.
The Bristol City game will bring the curtain down on Wagstaff’s Valley career though, exactly five years to the day after his manager said his goodyes to the Valley faithful.
The likeable 23-year-old Maidstone born player will not be offered a deal for next season so Saturday will be the last chance for him to say his goodbyes to the fans. Hopefully, Powell will remember the opportunity he was given to do the same thing by Alan Pardew.
Bristol City are already relegated so only pride will be at stake for them. The Robins will need to drastically reduce their wage bill before next season and the vultures may well be circling. Albert Adomah and Sam Baldock have previously been on Charlton’s wanted list and the club may revive their interest.
Powell is unlikely to tinker with his team too much. The Under-18 and Under-21 sides have important play-off matches over the Bank Holiday weekend and the manager may prefer to see his yougsters play in more meaningful matches.
Injured midfield duo, Andy Hughes and Johnnie Jackson, could be on the bench if they have recovered sufficiently.
One player who may get a few minutes from the bench though is Michael Smith. Smith had a fine game at Tonbridge on Wednesday and Powell may wish to see him in action with next season in mind.
The Addicks could line-up like this:
Hamer; Solly, Morrison, Dervite, Wiggins; Pritchard, Gower, Hollands, Harriott; Kermorgant, Fuller.
Subs: Button, Taylor, Wilson, Wagstaff, Haynes, Obika, Smith.
Carl Berry from Surrey will be the referee.
A real end of the season game with nothing riding on the result. However, players from both sides will be eyeing new contracts and looking to impress their managers.
If the Addicks are focused they can keep their recent good run going and end the season on a high.
