Charlton Ath v Brighton Preview
Charlton Ath v Brighton Preview

The fans plan to mark the 20th anniversary of the the return to The Valley by breaking into applause at 3.07pm on Saturday afternoon, the exact time that Colin Walsh scored the goal against Portsmouth in that first match back at Charlton’s spiritual home in 1992.

Brighton are the perfect opponents for this fixture. Their fans have had to endure a nomadic existence since they left the Goldstone ground back in 1997 but they now have the state-of-the-art Amex Stadium in Falmer to call home.

The Seagulls sold their entire allocation for the match almost as soon as the tickets went on sale so the game should be played in a cracking atmosphere. It is Brighton’s second successive Saturday in South London and they will be hoping to do better this time around. Bitter rivals, Crystal Palace, beat them 3-0 a week ago and to make matters worse, central defender, Lewis Dunk, was sent off and will miss the game at The Valley.

Chris Powell has intimated that he will rotate the squad more this season though players such as Hamer, Solly, Morrison and Jackson are likely to play if available.

Dorian Dervite had a fine game as Michael Morrison’s deputy at Millwall but is likely to be back on the bench as Morrison is available again after suspension.

Lawrie Wilson could challenge Bradley Pritchard for the wide right berth but will probably begin his comeback from the bench. Emmanuel Frimpong will be hoping to start and Chris Powell may switch Johnnie Jackson to the left, in place of Salim Kerkar, to accomodate the Arsenal loanee.

The pace of Danny Haynes has been a potent weapon for Powell and the manager may restore him to the front line.

Charlton could look like this:

Hamer; Solly, Cort, Morrison, Seaborne; Pritchard, Stephens, Frimpong, Jackson; Kermorgant, Haynes.

Subs: Button, Dervite, Green, Jonsson, Kerkar, Hulse, Wright-Phillips.

The referee will be Darren Sheldrake from Surrey.

If Powell adopts the higher tempo, more attack minded game plan he has utilised more often recently, the Addicks could give their visitors another miserable afternoon in South London.
