Saturday will mark the twenty-third anniversary of Charlton’s return to The Valley after seven long years in exile.

The Valley3

The date is indelibly etched on the memory of Addicks fans of a certain age. But will they get to celebrate the occasion with an unlikely win on the South Coast?

Brighton are still unbeaten after eighteen games, so the signs are not good. But it may not be quite as unlikely as many may think.

The Seagulls have won ten and drawn eight of their league games, with all ten wins being by a single goal. Apart from the 3-2 win at Ipswich, Brighton have failed to score more than twice in any game.

Chris Hughton organises his side well, they are defensively sound, but not prolific scorers. Preston managed to eke out a 0-0 draw at the Amex earlier in the season.

Johnnie Jackson is a confirmed traveller, but it is doubtful if Fraeye will risk his hamstring with vital home games with Leeds and Bolton coming up after this game.

Tareiq Holmes-Dennis may have done enough recently to keep a starting berth at the expense of either Chris Solly or Morgan Fox.

If Jackson is ruled out, El-Hadji Ba is his likely replacement. Simon Makienok was disappointing against Ipswich but may keep his place.

Paradoxically, Ademola Lookman was arguably Charlton’s best player against the Tractor Boys, but may make way for the greater physical presence of Ricardo Vaz Te for this game.

The Addicks could look something like this:

Henderson; Solly, Bauer, Sarr, Holmes-Dennis; Diarra, Cousins, Ba, Gudmundsson; Makienok, Vaz Te.

Subs: Pope, Fox, Lennon, Charles-Cook, Ahearne-Grant, Ghoochannejhad, Lookman.

Hampshire’s Keith Stroud will be the man in charge.

Any sort of a result would be a bonus, but if Charlton could somehow score the first goal, it could be an interesting afternoon.
