Defeat for Barnsley at The Valley would effectively extinguish their survival chances.

The Tykes are renowned escapologists at this level but time may finally catch up with them this season.

It will not be easy for Jose Riga’s side, they will have to show patience and composure and take their chances when they arrive.

A win would let all concerned with the Valley outfit breathe a little easier.

Riga will have to decide on how adventurous he is prepared to be to grab the vital win.

The Under-21s beat Swansea 2-1 in their final league game of the season at Sparrows Lane on Monday afternoon. An own goal by Harry Osborne was cancelled out by a Harry Lennon strike and the Addicks snatched a late win through Ollie Muldoon.

The line-up did not include either Chris Solly or Davide Petrucci, fuelling speculation that the duo could figure in the Barnsley match.

Ben Hamer has had a couple of indifferent matches recently but is likely to retain the gloves. Chris Solly made an impressive cameo appearance at Brighton and Riga may be tempted to start with him.

Michael Morrison, Dorian Dervite and Rhoys Wiggins are all likely to start again, though Richard Wood will be pressing Dervite for his place.

Danny Green, Davide Petrucci and Callum Harriott will also be pushing for inclusion but Lawrie Wilson, Jordan Cousins, Diego Poyet and Johnnie Jackson are likely to be the central quartet.

Jonathan Obika will be available again after missing Saturday’s game because of a family commitment.

Obika, Reza Ghoochannejhad, Simon Church, Marvin Sordell and Joe Pigott will be vying for a berth up front.

A nervy night for both sides beckons but Riga will be hugely disappointed if his team do not take all three points.
