What a game, it had almost everything, with a few ‘first of the season’ moments thrown in for good measure.
It was the first time the Addicks had come from behind to win this campaign, the first time one of their players had scored twice in a game and also the first time they have netted three times in a league match.
Charlton could have had a penalty and Brighton struck both posts and had a goal bound effort headed off the line.
The Valley pitch was heavy but did not prevent the Seagulls playing their, neat, quick passing game. Without long term injury victim, Craig Mackail-Smith, the visitors do lack their main cutting edge though.
The industrious and resolute Addicks made life difficult for Brighton’s creative players, but it was the visitors who took the lead midway through the opening period.
Good work down the left by Andrew Crofts and Will Buckley saw the ball played in to Leonardo Ulloa. Charlton should have cleared the danger and Ulloa took advantage to fire past Ben Alnwick.
The Addicks almost made an instant response but Cameron Stewart put the ball just wide of Peter Brezovan’s left hand post.
The home fans did not have long to wait for parity to be restored though. Ten minutes after going behind, Charlton levelled when Yann Kermorgant and Cameron Stewart combined on the left, to deliver a ball for Lawrie Wilson to thunder home his first goal of the season.
The Addicks went ahead just before the hour mark. Kermorgant miscued an overhead effort but the ball fell kindly for Wilson, who drilled home his second goal of the afternoon.
Ulloa tried to emulate Wilson’s feat, but his header from a right-wing corner, was cleared off the line by Dale Stephens. With fifteen minutes left, Charlton appeared to have put the game to bed when Kermorgant curled in one of his trademark free-kicks, following a foul on Rhoys Wiggins by Liam Bridcutt.
Four minutes later, the Seagulls struck both posts. First, substitute Ashley Barnes’ curler came back off Alnwick’s left-hand post, then fellow substitute, Inigo Calderon, hit the other post from the rebound.
The visitors made sure the Valley faithful had a nervy end to the game when Ulloa finally notched his second in stoppage time.
