Charlton had to come from behind to grab a point against a physical and resilient Rotherham side, after the visitors had taken the lead in controversial fashion.
In what may prove to be Steve Evans’ last game in charge of the Millers, his side tried to launch a typical smash and grab raid and took only their second point of the season.
The Addicks dominated proceedings but lacked a little in terms creativity and the promised attacking midfielder due to arrive next week, will be a welcome addition to Luzon’s squad. His team are overly reliant on Johann Berg Gudmundsson to deliver the creative spark.
On a bright and sunny afternoon, Luzon fielded his first choice back four in front of Nick Pope, El-Hadji Ba partnered Ahmed Kashi in the engine room, with Jordan Cousins on the left.
Tony Watt and Igor Vetokele were the front runners, with Simon Makienok and Karlan Ahearne-Grant providing alternative striking options from the bench.
After being on the back foot for most of the opening period, Rotherham took the lead in the most controversial of circumstances.
Referee, Keith Stroud, awarded what looked a generous free-kick on the edge of the box after 38 minutes.
Vadid Odijdja-Ofoe’s effort seemed to take a deflection off a Millers attacker before going behind, but Stroud awarded a corner.
Though they had every reason to feel hard done by, Charlton’s defending at the corner was poor.
The flag-kick from the right arrived at the far post, and Farrend Rawson was on his own, to slide the ball in unopposed. It was hard not to believe that, had he been on the pitch, Makienok would not have dealt with the danger.
Makienok finally entered the fray after 63 minutes, and the big Dane’s impact was instant.
Makienok got on the end of a deep cross from Gudmundsson and played the ball across the face of the goal, and Patrick Bauer bundled the ball in from close range.
Watt and Gudmundsson tried their luck from range, but it was not going to be their day.
