After a break of over eleven years, Voice Of The Valley returned to the streets of SE7. In the intervening period, the internet has gone into overdrive so it will be interesting to see how the iconic fanzine fares.
Judging by today, it will be as popular as ever. Nigel was doing brisk trade from his pitch on the corner of Floyd Road and Ransome Walk. He was doing a sterling selling job and must have been hoarse long before kick-off.
Readers will be keen to hear Rick Everitt’s inside track on summer events at the club but they may have to be patient a while longer.
Chris Powell reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation for the visit of Birmingham. Dorian Dervite made way for Dale Stephens – who partnered Johnnie Jackson in central midfield – and Bradley Pritchard also dropped to the bench, with Yann Kermorgant being restored to the front line.
Charlton had by far the better of the game and it was only late on, after they fell behind, that the Blues really pushed on. After taking an 88th minute lead, Charlton brought Dervite on as an extra defender but surrendered the iniative to their visitors.
Once again, the achilles heel of failing to see a game out haunted the Addicks. In the last three games, they have conceded five goals in the last quarter of an hour. They were in winning positions in all those games but have taken just a solitary point.
With tough games at Hull and Leicester up next, Charlton may live to regret their profligacy.
The Addicks went ahead three minutes from the end. Chris Solly delivered an inch perfect cross from the right to present Yann Kermorgant with the simplest of chances to head home.
As at St Andrews on the first day of the season, Birmingham cancelled out Charlton’s late goal deep in stoppage time. Chris Burke’s cross from the right was prodded home from close range by Wade Elliott.
Powell will once again be rueing his team’s inability to see a game out.
