The Sea of Red, Wall of Noise game was preceded by Katrien Meire addressing the crowd from the pitch about the rationale of the idea.
16,000 programmes were printed for the match and handed out to fans free of charge before the match.
The Addicks brought Lawrie Wilson back for Chris Solly. Solly would have struggled to play two games in quick succession.
Michael Morrison recovered from a bout of illness and returned to partner Dorian Dervite in the centre. Morgan Fox replaced the injured Rhoys Wiggins to complete a much changed defence.
Astrit Ajdarevic, Reza Ghoochannejhad and Simon Church returned in place of Callum Harriott, Marvin Sordell and Jonathan Obika.
Charlton played some good stuff but their chronic lack of ability to score again haunted them.
The main talking points came early in the second half. Six minutes after the break, Bolton had a corner and a goal bound header from Matt Mills was spectacularly hooked off the line by Diego Poyet.
Seven minutes later the Addicks felt they were denied a penalty. The hard working Church took the ball off Bolton keeper, Adam Bogdan. The keeper appeared to bring Church down as the striker took the ball away from him. Had the penalty been given, Bogdan would have been given a red card.
Charlton could not be faulted for their effort but they continue to struggle to score. That lack of scoring ability means the Addicks will be nervously looking over their shoulder for the rest of the season.
