Cyclothon UK returns to Brands Hatch next month, one year on from the Paralympic Road Cycling events at the Kent venue.
It will be the third running for the charity event that offers a challenge to both solo and team cyclists.
The 12 hour endurance team relay road cycling race will take place on the Grand Prix circuit, which formed much of the Paralympic course in 2012. The challenging nature of the track, complete with hills and sweeping bends, has received glowing praise by both Paralympic riders and previous Cyclothon competitors.
Once again the event will be contested by a host of sporting celebrities. Organiser Victor Ubogu will be joined by fellow international rugby players, and a friendly rivalry between British territories is expected to feature.
Victor will be joined on the Team Bulldogs with Englishmen John Hall, Mark Regan and Lee Mears. Scotland’s Team Jocks features Craig Chalmers, Scott Hastings, Gavin Kerr and Doddie Weir, whilst Alix Popham and Colin Charvis will take the lead for Team Dragons, which also features Welsh players Lloyd Burns and Iestyn Thomas.
With hundreds of international caps between them, supporters will be keen to see who still has the stamina and cycling power to lead their Home Nation side to victory.
The Welsh contingent will be boosted by weather presenter Sian Lloyd, Vice President of Abigail’s Footsteps charity. Saddling up for the first time at the event, Sian has forecasted a “really sunny enjoyable day”.
In addition to the challenges on track, Cyclothon offers a ‘luxury event’ experience at Brands Hatch, with pit garages, hot showers, changing rooms, breakfast, lunch and dinner, free massage, mechanical support, high value prizes and the chance for all riders to mix with sporting stars.
The organisers are also encouraging local businesses and schools to come to the event to cheer on the sporting celebrities and charities that are taking part. Entry is free for all spectators and the event will run for 12 hours from 7:30am until the award presentation ceremony on the podium at 7:30pm.
Registration to compete in the event closes on Friday August 16th. Those wishing to enter a team or solo ride can book by calling VU Ltd on 0871 871 5300. For more details visit www.cyclothonuk.com or follow updates on twitter @cyclothonuk
