Carlisle United v Gillingham preview

Gillingham head to Carlisle tonight looking to book their place in the FA Cup Third Round.

Steve Lovell’s side make the long trip north for the Second Round replay after it was postponed last Tuesday night due to a frozen pitch.

Only a handful of hardy fans are expected to make the long journey with a home tie against Sheffield Wednesday awaiting the winners.

Having thrashed Bristol Rovers 4-1 in the league at the weekend, Lovell is expected to keep faith with the side that served him so well at Priestfield.

Mark Byrne was a revelation against Bristol Rovers and he will undoubtedly keep his place in the side in a midfield four including Sean Clare, Lee Martin and Scott Wagstaff.

Lovell opted to go with a back four of Luke O’Neill, Ben Nugent, Max Ehmer and Alex Lacey at the weekend and could well do the same again at Carlisle with Gabriel Zakuani and Bradley Garmston having to be content with places on the bench.

Up front, Josh Parker seems set to keep his place alongside Tom Eaves with Conor Wilkinson available once again.

With a trip to Fleetwood Town in the league to come on Friday night, Lovell will hope his side can make their passage through to the next round without picking up any injuries going into the busy Christmas and New Year schedule.

Carlisle boss Keith Curle is searching for a winning combination after five games without victory.

Captain Danny Grainger is likely to come back in at left-back after returning from a rib injury as a substitute at the weekend, with Tom Parkes vulnerable.

The Cumbrians have also confirmed long-term absentee Jason Kennedy will miss the rest of the season, while on-loan goalkeeper Shamal George has returned to Liverpool with ankle trouble.

Jamie Devitt, Shaun Miller and Kelvin Etuhu are among those hoping for recalls to the starting XI.
