The Invicta Dynamos will take a 6-2 lead into Sunday night’s 2nd leg of their play-off game against the Cardiff NIHL Devils.
Kevin Parrish’s side put in a thoroughly professional performance down in Wales to return to Kent with a four goal advantage.
Going into Saturday night’s game, the Dynamos took to the ice without the services of injured trio Shaun Yardley, Ryan Giles and Elliott Knell.
Despite going with a numerical disadvantange, the visitors were to put in a great sixty minute shift and took just 89 seconds to open the scoring as Danny Hammond fired home after great work by Callum Fowler.
After picking up a couple of penalties, the Dynamos were to double their lead in the eleventh minute when Fowler turned provider for Juraj Huska with the import slamming the puck home.
A succession of penalties for both sides saw the period end with the Dynamos close down a 5 on 3, whilst some pushing and shoving saw both teams square up at the end of the first twenty minutes.
The Dynamos came out fired up for the second period and took just 77 seconds to make it 3-0 when Chris Cooke made the most of a powerplay to score.
Cardiff were to claw a goal back in the 28th minute, but the Dynamos were to restore their three goal advantage just four minutes later with Andy Smith playing a great one two with Fowler before tipping home.
It was to be 5-1 just 37 seconds later as Smith returned the favour to Fowler who made mo mistake in front of goal.
The home side were to pull one more back before the end of the period, but it proved to be their final score of the night as the Dynamos capped a fine performance with their sixth goal with little over three minutes left on the clock.
Once again it was the club’s leading scorer, Andy Smith, who capped off a fine individual performance to grab his second of the night with import Marek Nahlik setting him up.
The long journey home will have been a lot sweeter for knowing the side will go into Sunday night’s game with such an advantage, but the Dynamos will have to be on top form to repel a Cardiff side that will come to Gillingham fired up and looking for revenge.
Face off is at 5:15pm at the Silver Blades Ice Bowl and a big crowd is expected to see who goes through to face either the Wightlink Raiders or Bracknell Hornets in the play-off semi finals with the Isle of Wight side leading 7-1 after the 1st leg.
