Given Charlton’s poor cup record, it is surprising that fans still get excited about the draw for the domestic knock out trophies but many will be keenly awaiting the draw in two weeks time on Monday 17 June.
The first round of the Capital One Cup is seeded and regionalised, so it is possible to narrow the field down when trying to predict who Charlton might face.
Some of the Midlands based teams can find themselves in either half of the draw so it is not an exact sciece. Roughly speaking, all the Championship and the top half of League One sides will be seeded and these teams will meet either a lower placed League One or a League Two opponent.
The Addicks will probably be drawn against one from the following group:
Bristol Rovers
Cheltenham Town
Colchester United
Dagenham & Redbridge
Exeter City
Gillingham
Newport County
Northampton Town
Oxford United
Plymouth Argyle
Portsmouth
Southend United
Stevenage
Torquay United
AFC Wimbledon
Wycombe Wanderers
The Addicks will face three of those teams – Dagenham & Redbridge, Portsmouth and AFC Wimbledon in pre-season friendlies. In the 2011/12 season, Charlton were drawn at home to Reading in the fist round of the competition, which was then called the Carling Cup. The Royals were due to visit The Valley for a pre-season game but the clubs called the fixture off once the cup draw was made.
Oxford’s Kassam Stadium and Newport’s Rodney Parade ground will appeal to those who like to visit new grounds. The match will be staged during week commencing 5 August, probably on Tuesday 6 August, so an away tie at Torquay would be an attractive proposition if the weather is good.
Two days after the cup draw, on Wednesday 19 June, the Premier and Football League fixtures will be announced at 9.00am.
