Kent’s Leon Camier is out of this weekend’s second round of the World Superbike Championship in Aragon after an accident on Friday afternoon.
The Brit was looking in imperious form and was running in the top three in the early stages of the Friday afternoon session when disaster struck.
He was running well until turn 10 on the Spanish circuit when he had a high sided crash, he was catapulted off his bike and through the air, landing on his left knee.
Camier was taken straight to the circuit’s medical unit, where he was assessed before being transferred to Alcaniz hospital for further assessment. He was operated on soon after and will now spend five days in a splint before beginning his recuperation, he is looking to be fit in time for the next round in two weeks’ time in Assen.
Talking about his disappointment of missing out on this weekend’s season round, Leon said: “”To be in the hospital and kept away from the race due to a flesh wound is boring and extremely frustrating to say the least. Having said that, I guess I should be thankful that nothing is broken as it was a pretty big impact. My frustration is made so much worse because the bike was feeling good, the lap-time was coming easily and I know we could have had a good fight this weekend.
“I’ll be doing everything I can to be back at Assen; it all depends on how the surgery heals. I just hope our luck changes and that we can get back out there to give the team a result.”
Team mate Jules Cluzel picked up the mantle as the sole remaining FIXI Crescent Suzuki bike, and ensured he qualified for the Superpole session, finishing 8th in the first two sessions.
In the Superpole session the Frenchman went onto qualify in 5th place, giving him a good chance of points in the two races on Sunday.
Camier’s fellow Brit Leon Haslam went out of qualifying in Superpole two but Tom Sykes was right up there qualifying in first place, with Jonathan Rea and Chaz Davies in 9th and 3rd places respectively and Irishman Eugene Laverty in second.
