Ashford’s Leon Camier will be on track as the eni Superbike World Championship series moves to Monza this weekend.
Camier will be looking to increase his riding fitness having had a crash at Aragon last month.
Teammate Jules Cluzel will be heading to a track that he knows well and has indeed won on when he was part of the World Supersport series as it was his maiden victory.
The Monza circuit will be testing him to the fullest as it is a quick circuit and the bikes are different to that to which he is used to riding around Monza but he will be drawing on his knowledge of the circuit from past series races there.
Camier by contrast is still struggling with the knee injury that he picked up at Aragon, and is working hard to regain full movement and fitness after having his stitches removed.
After showing his courage at Assen two weeks ago with two solid rides, he will be looking to move towards challenging the front end of the grid as his fitness improves.
Speaking ahead of the weekend race, Camier said: “I’m expecting a pretty hard weekend at Monza, regardless of my fitness. It’s a tough and fast circuit to race at, but we have a few things to try and if we get the set-up right and the chassis working well we might be able to make some advantages count on the track that will help us.
“My knee is getting better all the time and I’m working hard to get it fully fit. It was pretty swollen after the race at Assen, but since then I’ve had the stitches out and it’s healed really well. It’s ok now, but still quite sore.
“I’ve done lots of gym work and a bit of hiking in the mountains to get it stronger and the movement better. It will still take a bit of time to get it 100%, but I am looking forward to getting back on the FIXI Crescent Suzuki to get myself bike fit, especially with my home race coming up soon.”
The circuit is one of the more picturesque on the calendar as it weaves its way through scenic parkland, with wooded areas and residential areas.
Free practice will take place on Friday morning, all the teams will take to the track to begin their preparation for the two races on Sunday. The first race on Sunday will get underway at 11am.
