Shane Byrne wrote himself into the record books as he won his fourth British Superbike title at Brands Hatch on Sunday._TES0528

The Kent rider took to the track at his home circuit of Brands Hatch hoping that he would become the first four time champion in the sport.

His wishes came true when he came from 9th on the grid to take the chequered flag and win the 2014 title in style in front of a track packed to the rafters with fans. He followed that up with victory in the final race of the season as well.Shane Byrne Brands3

The weekend wasn’t without incident though, as his title rival Ryuichi Kiyonari crashed in practice on Friday morning injuring his collarbone.

It was touch and go if he would race, he didn’t appear for qualifying or race one on Saturday, with a decision to be taken on Sunday morning on the remaining two races of the season.

In Saturday’s race one, Byrne took the lead on a wet track and whilst sitting in second place he crashed out, having done nothing different to normal. It meant that the title was going to go down to Sunday with Kiyo hinting he would give it a go.Shane Byrne Brands2

The race was won by Aylesford’s very own who took his first ever win and a well-deserved one at that in the British Superbikes.

Sunday was a different day and on a dry track Shakey showed his true talent. He came storming through from 9th place to take the lead, early on in the race and from there on in he went on to build an unassailable lead.Shane Byrne Brands4

When he crossed the line, the celebrations really began for Shakey, his family and friends as well as the Paul Bird Motorsport team and his fans at Brands Hatch.

Once again Howie Mainwaring made it another good race as he brought his Quattro Plant Kawasaki machine home in third place, for his second podium of the weekend.Shane Byrne Brands5

The third and final race of the weekend would also bring drama of its own with a safety car and the race ending under a red flag.

Shakey lined up behind Josh Brookes in second position but he led into the first corner and despite a tussle with Brookes in the early stages he was not going to be beaten.Shane Byrne Brands7

With all the goings on with riders falling he was undeterred and went on to finish the season on a high and underline just why he is the four times champion.
