Shane Byrne bounced back after a crash in race one of the British Superbike Championships at Brands Hatch with victory in race two.
Shakey, on his home track, was looking to strengthen his grip at the top of the Championship standings, but found himself having a fight on his hands to secure any points after crashing in race one.
It was Josh Brookes who capitalised on Byrne’s mistake to pick up his first BSB victory of the season with title rival Alex Lowes finishing in second place and Ryuichi Kiyonari in third.
There was a ding dong battle up at the front of the race between Brookes, Byrne and Lowes who all traded places before the crowd were denied what would have been a thrilling end to the race, if he could have made a move for the lead stick.
However, as he came down into Hawthorne he tried to drive down the inside of Brookes but his bike went from underneath him and he was sent tumbling to the ground, with his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki looking a bit worse for wear.
Credit to Shakey’s race engineers as they had his bike ready to go for race two and taking its place on the second row of the grid.
Byrne was in the lead from the off and despite the introduction of the safety car on lap seven after a crash by Lee Costello he was going to take some stopping.
James Ellison was pushing Shakey close and it was looking like he could make a move in the closing laps but no one was going to deny the Isle of Sheppey based rider from standing on the top step at his home track.
Giving his reaction after race two Shane said: “We had a good strategy for race one. Alex led for a bit and then Josh came passed and I was content to sit and watch them for a bit and that was cool. I got passed Alex and got +.3 and I thought if we could pull a bit on Alex and then make a move on Josh we might be able to get away at the front.
“The next couple of corners later Alex came back passed me and I decided it was time to try and get to the front and push. I got to the front that wasn’t the difficult bit; I just went straight out the back door as soon as I did! I made a mess of the bike and the team did a fantastic job to get it all back together for race two.
“I got a good start in the second one and I wanted to win that race for the team and that was really important. The guys gave me a really tough day; so tough I fell down in race one. I enjoyed the battle with these guys, we want to fight and really go racing. I am happy to have ended today with a win before the triple header next at Oulton Park.”
Shakey will be back on track for the triple header at Oulton Park over the weekend of the 10th and 11th August.
