Charlton achieved back-to-back wins for the first time since October when they beat Bury 1-0 on Saturday.
A well crafted chance converted by Mark Marshall seperated the teams, though the Addicks held the upper hand throughout and struck the woodwork twice.
Karl Robinson made two enforced changes to his starting line-up, Anfernee Dijksteel and Ben Reeves coming in for Naby Sarr and Ricky Holmes.
The manager was only able to name five subs, which included Chris Solly and Jake Forster-Caskey, who were not 100% fit.
The Addicks fashioned two early chances. Ben Reeves headed narrowly wide, and Josh Magennis was foiled by Connor Ripley.
The Shakers’ best chance fell to James Hanson, following a move involving Greg Leigh and Harry Bunn.
Midway through the opening period, Magennis spurned a golden opportunity when he failed to lift his attempted lob over Connor Ripley.
The decisive moment came just past the hour mark. Joe Aribo jinked past defenders in the box to get to the byline. His cut back found Mark Marshall who stabbed the ball home, for his first game for the club.
Stephy Mavididi nearly doubled the visitors’ advantage five minutes later, following some trickery in the box. His shot was pushed onto the post by Ripley.
Bury huffed and puffed towards the end, but Charlton saw the game out.
The joy the result brought to the players was plain for all to see at the end. At least there was a positive to end a difficult week.
Karl Robinson said this to the media after the game:
“I’m over the moon. We had a meeting with the players yesterday and talked about how you can only control the things that you control and today we controlled our own performance.
“Ok, things right, wrong or indifferent go on around the football club, but it’s about us and Charlton and the people that come and support this great club.
“This could have been three or four today and that’s the worry. I’m getting more and more grey hairs since I’ve been here.
“I’d love someone to bring me a cup of tea with us three or four up with 15 minutes to go,but we held on. We hit the post twice, had two or three one-on-ones and scored a good goal.
“I thought Kashi was sensational in midfield today. But all of them, to a man, were excellent. Young Anfernee Djksteel, Harry Lennon, Ezri Konsa, Jay Dasilva – I’m just naming all my players! I’m very proud of them.””
The win lifted the Addicks back into the play-off zone.
Next up are Walsall, who visit The Valley next Saturday.
