Burton Albion v Gillingham preview

It’s make or break for Gillingham this weekend as they try to get back into the play-off places.

Burton2

Justin Edinburgh takes his side to high flying Burton knowing possibly only a win will do as The Gills look to claw back into the top six having slipped out of the play-off places.

A lot will depend upon how Barnsley get on at home to already relegated Colchester United, but The Gills must go to the second place team believing they still have a chance.

Manager Justin Edinburgh certainly hasn’t given up hope of securing one of the four play-off spots, but seems likely to go into the game without the services of Andrew Crofts, Adam El-Abd and Bradley Garmston who are all rated as doubtful.

There’s been better news though this week with both Dominic Samuel and Doug Loft having returned to training and Edinburgh may be tempted to use one or both of them on Saturday.

If Samuel is deemed fit enough to start, he seems likely to partner Cody McDonald in attack with Gillingham knowing only a win could do.

Barnsley going into the weekend one point ahead, so a point at Burton may not be enough for The Gills, although it would take the race for the play-offs into the final weekend with Gillingham to entertain Millwall and Barnsley having to travel to league leaders Wigan Athletic.

Whatever happens, it has been a fantastic season for The Gills and this crop of young players have come a long way in such a short space of time.

To lose out on a play-off spot now though would be a bitter pill to swallow having seemingly been on course for a top two spot for large parts of the season.

Gillingham fans are expected to travel in their numbers for this crunch game and come 5pm on Saturday the picture will be a lot clearer as to where they will be visiting next season.
