Burnley 0-1 Charlton Athletic

Nine points in eleven days have sent the Addicks from hovering just above the relegation zone to four points off the play-off zone.

Charlton had to make one enforced change, Dale Stephens was ill and his place was taken by Eggert Jonsson. The absence of Stephens was to rob the Addicks of much of their creativity from the centre of the park.

Jonsson’s involvement and Hollands’ move to Swindon meant a return to the bench for Scott Wagstaff.

The incident that had a profound effect on the game happened after 14 minutes. Following neat interplay between Chris Solly and Bradley Pritchard, the full-back advanced to curl a shot that was saved by Kieran Trippier on the line. Unfortunately for him, Burnley’s right-back used his hand to keep Solly’s shot out. Jackson’s follow up struck the prostrate Trippier before Haynes’ effort hit the bar.

However, Bobby Madley had already blown up for a penalty and the referee also brandished a red card at Trippier.

The angle of Johnnie Jackson’s run-up gave Lee Grant a huge hint as to where the Charlton skipper was going to place his kick. Grant dived to his right to turn the ball round the post. Including the penalty shoot-out against Leyton Orient, Jackson has now missed his last three spot-kicks and the skipper may now choose to pass the responsibility to another player.

Jonsson had a difficult afternoon and was replaced by Ricardo Fuller after 53 minutes. The home side worked tirelessly and made light of their numerical disadvantage but a moment of real quality settled the match.

With just over twenty minutes left, Jackson sent in an angled cross from the left. Rob Hulse headed the ball back across goal where Danny Haynes rose majestically to head over Grant and into the net. Haynes then headed for the corner flag to milk the applause of the travelling fans.

The win took the Addicks to within four points of the play-off zone and they are now ten points clear of the relegation places.
