A five-star performance from Conference Premier side Dover Athletic ensured their was no upset at Burgess Hill Town’s Green Elephant Stadium with an emphatic victory to be in the FA Cup First Round Proper Draw for the 16/17 season.
The form-guide suggested this could have been a tough afternoon for The Whites against The Hillian’s of the Ryman League but it was a professional and clinical performance by the visitors.
Dover took an early lead as Ricky Miller found space on the right-edge of the penalty area and saw his low-drive settle in the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
The Hillian’s responded well with set-pieces in quick succession but The Whites comfortably dealt with any potential danger.
The Whites and Miller had a chance to double their tally but despite Walker-Harris fumbling a Mitch Pinnock free-kick in front of goal the striker reacted well but poked the ball wide of the target.
The Hillians certainly weren’t helped in the early stages losing two players to injury – Sam Fisk lasting just over ten minutes whilst his replacement James Richmond only lasted ten minutes himself.
Home custodian Walker-Moore was certainly the busiest of the two goalkeepers as Ricky Modeste showed strength to get a header in on goal whilst Pinnock picked up a loose ball and saw his shot from range held at the second attempt.
The Whites doubled their lead just after the half-hour. A well-worked goal resulting from a delightful cross-field pass by Jim Stevenson put Pinnock in on goal and he duly obliged opening his Dover account half-volleying across Walker-Moore into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal
The Hillians had a mountain to climb two goals and two substitutes down.
On the brink of half-time The Whites made it three. Miller showed great skill and strength on the right hand side and after cutting back from the by-line saw his goal-bound shot saved by Walker-Moore with Modeste on hand to scramble the ball home from close range.
When asked about the award of the goal Modeste said “they gave it me so I’m having it”. Miller will surely claim it as will Modeste – One for the dubious goals panel…
Coming on as a half-time substitute Tyrone Marsh didn’t take long to open his Dover Athletic account, five minutes in linking up well with Miller and Modeste and coolly lofting the ball over the advancing ‘keeper into the back of the net.
Just shy of the hour mark Ricky Miller capitalised on indecision at the back of the home defence – Cheik Toure and Walker-Moore left the ball for one-another with the striker nipping in to score perhaps the easiest goal of his career.
Miller with his second of the game or would Dover’s third change hands from Modeste for the reward of an FA Cup hat-trick?
With fifteen minutes remaining Miller’s replacement Ira Jackson poked home Pinnock’s goal-bound effort from close-range but was adjudged to be offside – With five on the board for The Whites at least it would’ve prove costly to the Conference Premier side.
With the game petering out The White’s new front pairing Marsh and Jackson linked up well but Walker-Moore was equal to it to force a corner – Captain Jamie Grimes was unlucky not to add to the total seeing his header loop towards goal but come back off the angle of corner and post.
Walker, a spectator for the majority of the game, was called into action in the closing stages as Lovi Fazackerly dropped a back-pass very short but the visiting ‘keeper was alert to the danger to maintain a clean sheet to save from close-range.
Walker then palming away a goal-bound curling effort as The Hillian’s put late pressure on the visitors’ goal following it by saving with his feet.
Despite the late pressure Walker and The Whites held firm to keep the clean sheet and return home with a resounding victory.
The draw on Monday could see The Whites play the likes of recent cup winners but now League Two side Portsmouth as Whites fans will now be talking fervently about who they would like to be drawn against.
