The Angels produced arguably their best display of the season, comfortably dispatching Burgess Hill Town despite the slender final scoreline.
The only goal of the game came via striker Alex Akrofi midway through the second half but in truth it was one-way traffic from start to finish as Steve McKimm’s men dominated in Sussex.
Tommy Whitnell (calf) and Chris Kinnear (knee) joined long-term absentees Tom Parkinson and Damien Scannell on the sidelines whilst there was a welcome return for Jack Parter following his move to Welling in the Summer. Luke Blewden, Liam Smith and Nathan Elder were also restored to the starting eleven.
The break of 10 days appeared to have reinvigorated the Angels as they started off the game on the front foot. The first couple of chances fell to midfielder Tom Beere, playing at the tip of the diamond, but both of his attempts were comfortably caught by opposition keeper James Shaw. Nathan Elder had the best chance of the first 45 minutes when he prodded goalwards following a frantic goalmouth scramble but again Shaw thwarted. Joe Turner created a couple of chances for himself but the Angels had to settle for a goalless first half despite their supremacy.
The half-time request from Steve McKimm would no doubt have been for more of the same as it appeared to be only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken. And it was, but not until the 71st minute, when Alex Akrofi shrugged off former Angel Gary Elphick before outpacing the centre half and slotting home much to the delight of the travelling contingent. The striker, who also notched at Thurrock in the previous league game, had been causing The Hillians endless problems all afternoon with his well-timed runs. Chances continued to fall for the Angels and, with Burgess Hill gambling in search of an unlikely equaliser, this just played even more into the hands of the likes of Beere and Akrofi who were finding acres of space at will. Turner drilled wide, substitute Dan Thompson’s shot was blocked and had Beere’s touch been a bit heavier he would have found himself around the onrushing keeper with an empty net at his mercy.
As it turned out, one goal was enough to see the Angels clinch their first three points since beating Brightlingsea Regent back on 19th August. A commanding performance, restricting Burgess Hill to just a few crosses into the box, goalkeeper Jonny Henly was virtually a bystander. Next up are newly promoted Dorking Wanderers at Longmead on Tuesday evening.
