Visitors to the legendary Brand Hatch Grand Prix circuit this weekend will be treated to a feast of two-wheeled entertainment, both on and off the track, in the BMCRC Club Bike Championships.
A 40-race motorcycle racing programme will be complemented by track parades and displays from no fewer than nine bike clubs dotted around the circuit’s lower paddock.
Colin Seeley, a star of the World Sidecar scene during the 1960s and a long-time visitor to Brands Hatch, will be arranging a display with a number of his riding friends. Colin’s relationship with the Kent circuit stretches back to the early 1950s, shortly after it was first transformed from a grass track into a road circuit.
His riding career was followed by success as a manufacturer, his eponymous brand proving prosperous in both international and domestic competition, including success in the Isle of Man TT. Seeley returns to the track sixty years on from his Brands Hatch debut on board one of his own bikes, a Seeley G50, in a track parade on Saturday before switching to a three-wheeled BMW on Sunday.
Britten’s Parade, outside the Kentagon restaurant, will host the Gold Star Owners’ Club. The BSA Gold Star was one of the fastest motorcycles of the 1950s and is a cult favourite amongst two-wheeled enthusiasts for its hand-built chassis and customisation packages.
Dorking’s Velocette Owners Club will be present to celebrate the popular marque’s racing history. The Birmingham-based firm tasted success at Grand Prix level between the 1920s and 1950s so there will be plenty of racing pedigree to enjoy.
The 1909 origins of the organising club, the BMCRC, will be revisited by the Brooklands Museum, who will be showcasing a selection of their classic machines.
Other manufacturers represented in the paddock displays will include Moto Rumi and British favourites Triumph, AMC and Norton.
Many of the motorcycles being exhibited will take part in track parades on both Saturday and Sunday. Other on-track entertainment will feature contests for both old and new machinery, including the powerful Morello MRO Powerbikes, which run open regulations, allowing a wide variety of bikes to take part. Powerbike competitors will be eligible to compete for the Champion of Brands title, first won by future Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill in 1984.
The paddock will be open, allowing spectators to get up close to all of the machines in the venue.
Tickets for the BMCRC Club Bike Championships on 9/10 August are available on the gate for £14, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information spectators should call 0843 453 9000 or visit www.brandshatch.co.uk
