BSB faces shake up for 2014

As we all turn our attentions to the start of the 2014 MCE British Superbike Championships the organisers have announced a change in the point scoring system.Shane Byrne Davies PSP

After consulting with the participating teams, MSV have decided to make a small adjustment to reward those riders who have finished in the top three in the 19 races before the showdown.

This means that the riders who have finished in first, second and third place and are through to the showdown will have their points set to 500 as will the others in the top six. However, those that finished on the podium will be awarded 5 for the winner, 3 for second and 1 for third.

This replaces the previous system of 3-2-1 and this means that the previous 19 results have a great influence on the final three races and the Showdown.

The MCE BSB Showdown has been in place since 2010 and in each season the championship has gone right down to the wire, literally being decided on the last lap of the last race of the season, in 2011 with Tommy Hill and again in 2013, with Alex Lowes narrowly edging out Shane Byrne.

Kent will be well represented in 2014 with Shakey targeting his fourth BSB crown and Howie Mainwaring stepping up to race on a front running bike and hoping to be a regular on the podium alongside Byrne.

The opening round of the 2014 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship takes place at Brands Hatch on Easter Monday, 21 April.

The Main Season concludes after the ninth round of the championship at Donington Park on 7 September and then it’s the decisive three-round Showdown phase at Assen, Silverstone and finally Brands Hatch on 18/19 October.
