New Welling United manager Jody Brown attended the Wings’ Reserve/Development squad game with Uxbridge and consented to give his views on the problems so far and the task in hand.
“It’s been unheard of. It’s been four games in nine days then one game in 27 days. We’re coming together now and have trained really hard.
“Really disappointed about the Alfreton game but we’re playing Reading Under 21s at their training ground on Tuesday and won’t be going into the Chester game without a game for two weeks.”
On Malachi Hudson and Charlie Penny going out on loan to Kingstonians, he said that he expected to sign another player this week, but declined to say who until the paperwork is completed. “They are two players I rate. I have spoken to both and they are happy. Kingstonians play six or seven games while we play three.
“Hopefully Charlie will drop down and score three or four goals and come back the same player and more confident. Malachi is a good player and can beat players, but I need my front three to contribute in the goals. He can go there and play with freedom and hopefully, we will have a couple of wins under our belt and it will be a different landscape and he can come back into the side and be an exciting player.
“If you look at all the goals conceded since I’ve been here, they’ve all been set plays or errors. Nobody has opened us up with good football.”
Some of the players he has recruited have been brought in because they have been in similar situations in the past and know what is needed to get out of relegation scraps. “They are certainly not long term signings.”, he said, reaffirming that Hudson and Penny are part of his long term plans.
On current loan players he said, We’ve got Bass (Aristide Bassele) for another month. Harry Osborne got injured in training at Charlton but was only ever here as cover for Barney Williams who is now fully fit again. (Josh) Carmichael, we’ve got until the 7th February.
When asked about a second goalkeeper, he said “We’ve got a goalkeeper who trains with us who we can sign if we need to. It’s difficult to sign a second goalkeeper in the situation we’re in”.
The interview ended there, however, on Friday evening there is a ‘Meet the Manager’ meeting in the Eric Brackstone Lounge at Welling United’s Park View Road ground where he and his assistant, Glen Little, will answer questions and advise on their long term aims.
