London Broncos will play one of their Stobart Super League matches in Kent as part of their efforts to spread the game and find a new home.
The Broncos have announced their home match against Hull on Sunday, May 20, will be held at Priestfield Stadium – home of Football League Two club Gillingham.
It will be the Londoners’ second “on-the-road” fixture following the decision to switch the Bradford game on May 6 to Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road.
Broncos chief executive Gus Mackay said: “This is an exciting opportunity to take the game to a new audience, meeting our strategic objective of growing the game across London and the south-east.
“We very much hope the local community will come out in support of the event and we’re already looking forward to the match.”
Securing a home for the team beyond the end of 2012 is currently the club’s most pressing priority – with their current deal to play at the Twickenham Stoop running out this year and Mackay has not ruled out seeking to use the Olympic Stadium.
Professional rugby league was played in Kent in 1983 when Kent Invicta shared London Road with Maidstone FC, although they lasted only one season before moving to Southend and then folding.
Gillingham’s commercial director Steve Lowe said: “It’s great to be working with the London Broncos to bring another professional sport to Kent, particularly just as the football season will be drawing to a close.
“I hope that the people of Kent come out and support us bringing Super League rugby to the county.
“It should be a great sporting occasion and will showcase rugby league to all those that follow it on TV, play it and read about it.”
