Michael Cheek scored the only goal as Bromley defeated Wrexham, but it was a true team performance that won them the F.A. Trophy.
Four years after losing the final, Bromley’s supporters can now forget that day thanks to the ability and determination of their players. Wrexham were hoping to take the trophy out of England for just the second time having done it themselves in 2013.
Ollie Palmer gave the Bromley defence an early test, but Billy Bingham threw his body in the way to block the shot. Then Bingham showed his attacking side when he clipped a diagonal cross that was just too high for Michael Cheek who could only direct it into the arms of Christian Dibble in the Wrexham goal.
Paul Mullin had a shot charged down by Chris Bush before Corey Whitely created an opportunity for himself, but the Bromley attacking midfielder could only blast over.
Jordan Davies of Wrexham arrived late to meet a deep low cross but directed his shot straight at Balcombe then the end to end nature continued, and Chris Bush headed over from Luke Coulson’s corner. Cheek laid it back for Harry Forster but his curler, aimed for the top corner, was too high.
Davies then showed great trickery to work his way into the penalty area, but he lost his footing and his appeals for a penalty area did not interest referee Thomas Bramall. Ben Tozer’s monster long throws caused the Bromley defence a threat and one was half cleared and returned deep into the box for him to meet with a header that flew over.
Ellery Balcombe made his first save of the match just before the end of the first half, but it was a straight-forward one from Mullan’s low shot.
Disaster then struck for Omar Sowunmi. There did not look to be too much on the challenge on him, but he went down immediately clutching his upper arm with what turned out to be a dislocated shoulder. He was replaced by Joe Partington who was probably unfortunate not to have been in the starting line-up in the first place.
There was still time for Bingham to flash a first time shot wide before the first forty-five minutes were ended.
Early in the second period, Davies headed wide from another huge Tozer throw then Mullan tried his luck from forty yards. It bounced over Balcombe, and the bar, but the Bromley custodian appeared to have it covered.
Ali Al-Hamadi eased his way in from the left and hit a fierce drive that Dibble showed a strong wrist to make an outstanding save then Bush sent Cheek clear, but Dibble made another strong save when beating out his fierce near post drive.
Some Wrexham supporters thought that Mullan had scored when he blazed a shot into the side netting from a tight angle and their excitement was quashed further when Bromley went ahead soon after.
Whitely was sent clear and drew Dibble out before squaring unselfishly for Cheek to fire high into the net.
He looked to add to his tally when meeting Partington’s cross, but his header was saved, then he almost got in again, but Max Cleworth made a great last-ditch challenge.
A series of substitutions, injuries and someone being taken ill in the Wrexham end broke up play and there were no further chances until the seven minutes of stoppage time were signalled. Bromley then had to dig deep in defence. Tozer hurled another of his rocket throws, Dan Jarvis nodded it back, and Jake Hyde’s header was superbly turned over by Balcombe.
Palmer’s cross then evaded everyone in the Bromley area and hit Hyde but rebounded wide, then in their last attack, Balcombe clawed out a cross and Hyde netted with a close range header but he was offside from the original cross, and the goal was disallowed.
Moments later, the final whistle was sounded, and Bromley’s celebrations commenced.
