Bromley have their biggest game of the season so far on Sunday afternoon when they take on Altrincham at a packed out Hayes Lane in the National League play-off Semi Final, knowing that they are just two wins away from a place in the Football League for the first time in the club’s 132 year history.
Bromley finished the regular season in third place with a club record tally of 81 points from their 46 league games, Andy Woodman’s team losing only nine times, guaranteeing themselves a place in the semi final along with home advantage.
Last Saturday a much changed Ravens side lost 2-1 away at Gateshead, the positives being Olufela Olomola getting back on the scoresheet & captain Byron Webster making his 150th appearance for the club, but prior to that The Ravens had won 3-1 away at Oxford City the previous Tuesday night which cemented third place thanks to goals from Ben Krauhaus, Idris Odutayo and Corey Whitely.
Altrincham make the trip down from Greater Manchester having been given a bye to the semi final after Gateshead’s expulsion from the play offs by the National League. Alty finished fourth in the table with 77points from 46 matches, finishing their campaign on a great run of form going six games unbeaten. Last Saturday Phil Parkinson’s side won 1-0 at home to Oxford City, Regan Linney with the crucial goal.
Altrincham have also never been in the Football League, but they were denied promotion to Division Four back in the 1980’s despite winning the league twice, losing the league election votes on both occassions, prior the days of automatic promotion.
When the sides met in the regular season, Bromley won 2-1 away with a late goal from Todd Miller after Justin Amaluzor had equalised Corey Whitely’s opener. The game at Hayes Lane in December, shown live on TNT Sports, ended 2-2. Olomola scoring twice for The Ravens, with Chris Conn-Clarke and then Alex Newby on target for the visitors late on with a spectacular free kick.
Both sides have one of the league’s top scorers in their ranks with Michael Cheek having netted 21 for Bromley this season and Alty’s Chris Conn-Clarke scoring 22. Defensively Bromley have only conceded 49 goals in the league all campiagn, while Altrincham let in ten more.
It’s a one off tie, finishing on the day with the possibility of extra time & penalties, the winners will progress through to the final at Wembley Stadium next Sunday 5th May and face the winners of Barnet V Solihull Moors, which is being played on Saturday evening.
The game has sold out with all tickets selling by Wednesday morning.
