Bromley vs AFC Wimbledon – Preview

Bromley play their first home game since winning promotion to the EFL tonight, when they take on AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup at Hayes Lane.

Both sides started their League Two campaigns with wins on Saturday, The Ravens winning 2-0 away at Harrogate Town, while Wimbledon’s victory came at home 4-2 over Colchester Utd.

Andy Woodman’s sides won their League Two debut in impressive style, courtesy of second half goals from Michael Cheek & Kamarl Grant at Harrogate, while Johnnie Jackson’s side saw off Colchester with goals from James Ball, Jake Reeves, Matty Stevens & Omar Bugiel.

Bugiel previously had a spell with Bromley, scoring the opening goal in the 2018 FA Trophy Final and fellow striker Joe Piggott had an impressive loan spell at Hayes Lane a decade ago.

Woodman praised his team and the travelling support after the Harrogate game, but emphasised this was just the opening match and he would be keeping is squads feet firmly on the ground. Summer signings Cam Congreve, Marcus Diananga & Danny Imray all made their Bromley debuts in the match, but the management kept the faith with the majority of the side that won promotion back in May.

The teams first met in AFC Wimbledon’s second ever game back in 2002 and regularly played against each other in their Isthmian League and National League South days, but the most recent game between The Ravens and The Wombles was on Easter Monday 2009 when they match ended 2-2, the Surrey side winning promotion to the National League at the end of that season.

Both teams will be hoping to continue their positive start to the season and also possibly set up a draw with a team from a higher division in the next round.

Some tickets are still available for home fans from the Bromley website, but the away allocation has sold out. There will be a printed programme on sale for £3.

Kick off at Hayes Lane is 7:45pm.
