Bromley v Peterborough United preview

Bromley take the weekend off from their National League campaign on Saturday and focus on their FA Cup First Round game at home to League One high flyers Peterborough Utd.

The Ravens go into the game on the back of two good wins, having beaten Hartlepool Utd 4-0 on Saturday and then Faversham Town 4-1 in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday.

Neil Smith’s side are fourteenth in the table with 23 points from 19 matches, picking up form following a tricky start to the season. They booked their place in this round with a 1-0 win at Gloucester City thanks to a Frankie Raymond free kick late in the second half.

Steve Evans ‘Posh’ side are currently third in League One with 33 points from their 17 matches, boasting an impressive record away from home, although they did lose 1-0 at Wycombe Wanderers last weekend.

Evans has already voiced his displeasure at having to play on a 3G pitch, saying it has no place in adult football and the team has trained on one this week to prepare. The Posh’s manager has not yet indicated if he will field a full strength team or bring in some squad players, given their promotion push and the vast numbers of games clubs have to play in a 24 team division along with the cups, among his squad Evans has former Newcastle defender Sebastian Bassong and Hibs forward Jason Cummings to pick from.

Bromley should almost be at full strength, although Colchester Utd loanee Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe was allowed to play in the last round by his parent club.

It’s expected to be close to a sell out crowd at Hayes Lane and with a healthy away following the game should be played in a cracking atmosphere worthy of the oldest cup competition in the world.

Bromley have not progressed beyond the second round of the FA Cup in their 126 year history and have never beaten Football League opposition in the competition, will this be the year they finally do it?
