Bromley heading to Wembley!
Bromley heading to Wembley!

For the first time since 1949, Bromley Football Club are on their way to Wembley.

A Gateshead own goal was the difference on aggregate with both sides, meaning they have won the right to play for the 2017-18 FA Trophy.

A Fraser Kerr own goal opened the scoring when he failed to clear a chance from Brandon Hanlan.

It wasn’t plain sailing for the visitors though. With just over 20 minutes remaining Jordan Burrow levelled the score on the day with a long range effort.

Both sides began with the same line ups from the first leg, which the Kent side carried a 3-2 lead from.

The Ravens were quick to extend their lead when Hanlan beat the Heed’s offside trap from a Louis Dennis through ball before the ball got caught up in Kerr’s legs. The defender failed to clear the ball as it trickled into the net of James Mongomery.

The hosts looked to get back into the game quickly though, and after Paddy McLaughlin’s long range effort flew over before the midfielder saw his volley from the edge of the area meet the same fate.

Whilst Gateshead were struggling to break through a tough Ravens back line, the whites weren’t offering much at the opposite end of the pitch. A slow period late in the first half came to en end when a late flurry of chances fell Gateshead’s way. But the Kent side held firm to keep their 4-2 aggregate lead going into half time.

The second half started with both sides creating chances. A Jordan Higgs cross narrowly evaded the run of Dennis and Higgs was also involved in the next chance, firing wide from close range.

The hosts game back through Wes York when he connected onto the end of a left wing cross but his effort was mis-hit and it flew into the side netting.

As the game evolved it became a scrappy affair with few chances. Bromley were looking to hold their lead and run the clock down whilst Gateshead didn’t seem willing to take necessary risks.

Frank Sutherland was Bromley’s hero in the 66th minute when he did well to block an effort from a corner.

He could do nothing about Gateshead’s equaliser though. Another corner from the right wing was cleared as far as Jordan Burrow who hit an unstoppable effort from 30 yards past David Gregory.

Bromley’s Dennis could doubt but his one-man counter attack ended with his low shot being well saved by Montgomery. This was a short break for the visitors, who were faced with attack after attack from the Tyneside squad.

The keeper was called into action from a counter attack again soon after this time denying Josh Rees as time continued to tick down.

The heroic defensive actions proved to be enough. As the full time whistle went Neil Smith and his staff burst away from the dugout to celebrate with their players and the travelling fans.

They’ll face Brackley Town in the final on May 20th.
