Bromley moved up to twelfth in the League Two table with an impressive win over Newport County at a sold out Hayes Lane on Boxing Day scoring four out of five goals from set pieces that the opposition were unable to handle.
The game got off to a cautious start with the first chance falling to The Ravens, when Ben Thompson was denied by Nick Townsend at his near post.
Cameron Congreve then had a shot deflected wide and put another effort over as Bromley started to press Newport.
The Ravens continued to push with the pressure finally paying off on 26 minutes when a Congreve corner was powerfully headed home by Omar Sowunmi in a crowded area.
Brynn Morris had County’s first chance, but he shot over before The Ravens pressed again with Congreve forcing Townsend to tip the ball over his bar from a corner.
The resulting corner did see Bromley go two up when Thompson found Callum Reynolds who headed home from close range with a diving effort for 2-0.
Sowunmi headed another corner over soon after and after Shane McLoughlin had seen his shot saved by Grant Smith at the other end The Ravens fashioned one last chance when Danny Imray found Michael Cheek with a cross and he nodded down for Thompson who put his chance wide from close range.
The second half saw Bromley start brightly, Imray had a shot saved by Townsend at his near post and McLoughlin cleared a Sowunmi header off the line from another corner.
The third goal came soon after though when Thompson’s corner found Reynolds at the far post and he headed the ball back across goal for Cheek to nod home for 3-0.
Thompson when close from range and then went even closer soon after when his fiercely struck shot hit the underside of the bar and Jude Arthurs pounced on the rebound to make it 4-0 with another headed goal on 70 minutes.
Newport finally came back into things a minute later when Kieron Evans made it 4-1 with a half volley from the edge of the area as Bromley seemed to switch off.
County then had their best spell of the game and a slick passing move ending with Kai Whitmore beating Smith at his near post to make it 4-2.
The Welsh side pushed for a spell to get right back into things, but a mix of over playing and offsides frustrated their efforts and they ran out of steam.
The game was put beyond doubt in injury time when Arthurs was fouled just outside the box and Thompson capped his fine performance with the goal it deserved as he curled a free kick over the wall into the top left hand corner of the net to make it 5-2 right at the end.
Andy Woodman’s men now prepare for their home game with Swindon Town on Sunday as they look to continue their excellent eight game unbeaten run into the new year and push towards the play off spots.
