Bromley 2-0 Aveley
Bromley 2-0 Aveley

Bromley progressed through to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy thanks to two second half goals from Michael Cheek & Louis Dennis against Aveley at Hayes Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Andy Woodman named a strong side for the game against National League South Aveley, with Callum Reynolds returning to the heart of the defence and they started the game on top when Alex Kirk had a header cleared off the line from a Josh Passley corner, then soon after Ben Krauhaus had a shot saved at the near post by Jonathan North.

Charlee Hughes fired over for the visitors on a rare break upfield, but it was Bromley who did virtually all of the pressing, North doing well palm away a Besart Topalloj cross that deflected off Ayyuba Jambang and dropped in just under the bar.

As the game got more physical, Hughes was booked for catching Kamarl Grant late for the second time in a minute as Referee Parkinson looked to calm things down.

Late in the half Louis Dennis had a chance one on one with North, but he made a great save to deny the striker and Michael Cheek’s effort from the rebound was blocked. Aveley’s back five dug in to block more shots and keep the half time score at 0-0.

The second half saw The Ravens press again, after a series of long throws from Kirk Grant had a header blocked on the line, before the vital break through came on 56 minutes when Topalloj was pulled back by Siju Odelusi in the box and Bromley were awarded a penalty.

Cheek tucked away the spot kick to make it 1-0 and calm the home crowd’s nerves. For a while the game slowed down, Bromley dropped back and sat on their lead with Sam Woods in front of the back five, but they eventually put the tie beyond doubt 20 minutes from time when Corey Whitely played in Dennis who coolly slid the ball past North into the far corner of the net for 2-0.

Aveley made three changes in a bid to go more attacking and get back into things, but they couldn’t find a way through, the closest chance coming when subs Joseph Gbode tried to play in Christopher Regis, but he just couldn’t connect with the pass when in a good position at the far post.

Bromley saw the game out and secured their place in the final eight, keeping the clean sheet Andy Woodman had said he would set out to do last week and they will look to be equally as solid next Saturday when they take on leaders Chesterfield at home in the National League.
