Bromley 1-2 Wrexham
Bromley 1-2 Wrexham

In front of a packed Hayes Lane Bromley were edged out of an entertaining match by National League leaders Wrexham thanks to two goals from top scorer Paul Mullin early in the second half and despite a late spell of pressure from The Ravens.

With Reice Charles-Cook suspended and Byron Webster injured, Andy Woodman gave keeper Sam Long and defender Deji Elerwe their full debuts lining up 5-3-2.

The kick off was delayed due to crowd congestion outside the ground, but once it got going Wrexham started on top looking dangerous down the left and continued to press with a series of corners and long throws.

Tunnicliffe had a header cleared off the line by Jude Arthurs, before Mendy headed against the bar from a Barnett cross. Callum Reynolds made a great saving block to deny Mullin as The Red Dragons continued to press and Tozer headed wide from a Davies corner.

Bromley’s first attempt on goal came when Reynolds spotted Lainton off his line and his attempted lob from the half way line just dropped on to the roof of the net.

The Ravens slowly came back into things as the half went on, Kellen Fisher playing in Michael Cheek whose shot was blocked. Late in the half Bromley then had a series of corners, but Wrexham were solid in defence and kept the score tied at zero.

The second half saw Wrexham start on top again, Mullin had a header saved by Long and he then made a stop from Davies.

The visitors’ breakthrough came on 56 minutes when Jones dispossessed Fisher on the right wing and crossed for Mullin who headed home at the far post for 1-0.

Wrexham’s second goal came only four minutes later when a long throw from Tozer was spilled by Long in the six yard box and Mullin pounced to make it 2-0 from close range.

Bromley rallied again though and came right back into the game on 63 minutes when they broke down the left, Besart Topalloj playing in Louis Dennis who found Cheek at the far post who converted from close range for 2-1.

Bromley continued to press from there and they should have had a penalty when Omar Sowunmi was wrestled to the ground by Tunnicliffe, but Referee Matthew Corlett waved the appeals away despite being well placed.

Cheek scuffed a chance wide when latching on to a good ball from Ryan Stirk and then Cheek & Dennis combined to set up Corey Whitely whose powerful strike hit the side netting from an angle.

Wrexham rallied from there with a series of long throws and corners, Elerwe doing a fantastic job keeping Palmer quiet and Long regaining his confidence with some good takes.

Late on The Ravens pressed again for an equaliser, Sowunmi going up front, but the closest they came was when Harry Forster’s low shot was comfortably saved by Howard to secure the win for Phil Parkinson’s top of the table side.

The defeat leaves Bromley in eleventh place, nine points off the play offs prior to their trip to Yeovil Town next Saturday.
