Bromley 1-1 Wealdstone
Bromley 1-1 Wealdstone

Bromley’s winless start to the season continued against an unbeaten Wealdstone at the Reloc8 Em Community Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bromley made three changes from the team that lost to Barnet on Saturday with all three making their first starts for the club. Former Maidenhead centre-back, Cole Kpekawa, came in for Reynolds, Josh Passley signed in the close season from Havant & Waterlooville, played at wing back for Arthurs and making a surprise senior debut was 19-year-old Academy striker, Soul Kader who replaced Adam Marriott.

The personnel may have been different, but Woodman continued to persevere with the same 5-3-2 formation which Bromley had used in both of their opening defeats in which they also failed to register a goal. There was some improvement against Wealdstone, but the performance was again unconvincing, and Wealdstone missed several good chances to put the game out of Bromley’s reach.

Bromley got off to the worst possible start falling behind after only four minutes. Webster failed to close down the lively Campbell on the edge of the D who managed to fire off an accurate low shot evading the despairing hand of Smith and the ball almost in slow motion nestled into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Wealdstone were playing with an assurance befitting a home team with Charles pulling the strings superbly in midfield and enjoyed the bulk of the early possession. Bromley did create a half chance in the 14th minute from a corner which Okoli headed just over. Bromley conceded possession softly on numerous occasions as Wealdstone with Bromley being saved by a number of last-ditch blocks.

Cheek produced a flash of brilliance in the 24th minute when he spotted the Wealdstone keeper off his line and attempted an audacious chip from the halfway line that bounced on top of the bar. Bromley were beginning to get themselves back in the game as a fierce Topalloj cross brushed the head of Kader in the 30th minute. A minute later the lively Kader went down in the box under pressure from the defender following a clever knock down by Passley but the referee waived play on.

Wealdstone came close to doubling their lead in the 37th minute when Campbell dispossessed Bingham only for his shot to be well blocked. In the same move, Wealdstone recycled the ball to the left of the area only for Olomola to blaze over from an angle when he should have hit the target. Krauhaus was booked for a poor challenge in the 41st minute and Charles picked up a booking for dissent as the game headed towards the break.

Bromley continued to struggle after the break and were exposed down the middle as Campbell raced 30 yards unchallenged before setting up Olomola whose tame shot was easily saved by Smith. Topolloj was booked moments later for pulling down his man to deny a similar opportunity as former Bromley-loanee Clayden started to threaten down the flanks. Wealdstone came close again in the 58th minute after a deft flick played in Olomola who rifled his shot high into the side-netting.

Woodman cut a frustrated figure from the bench and had seen enough. He sent on a winger for a central defender in the 66th minute with Miller coming on for the inexperienced Millwall-loanee Okoli. Meanwhile, Wealdstone continued to have chances as Obiero burst into the box only to shoot wildly over. Debutant Bowen was replaced by the experienced Kretzschmar as Wealdstone made their first change.

Bromley were starting to show more intent and were rewarded in the 71st minute when the energetic Krauhaus pocketed possession and fed the ball through to Cheek. Cheek squared it to Kader who struggled to control his pass at first but managed to balance himself enough to instinctively toe poke the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to mark a memorable debut.

Kpekawa was harshly booked for a dive in the 74th minute and Woodman followed him into the book a minute later for charging out of his area. Bromley finished strongly and a couple of looping crosses from Miller nearly resulted in a breakthrough. The first eventually resulted in a rasping shot from Webster from the edge of the box which sailed narrowly over.

In the meantime, Wealdstone nearly sealed the points as Passley misjudged a square cross which fell to Campbell who charged into the area only to see his low drive brilliantly blocked by the onrushing Smith.

The second Miller cross occurred in the last minute of normal time and led to a loud penalty appeal as the Wealdstone keeper failed to deal with the cross and palmed the ball softly into the path of Cheek. Cheek appeared to be clipped by the keeper as he side-footed the ball wide with the goal at his mercy.

Woodman admitted after the match that Bromley were still looking to strengthen the squad and he will be relieved to have halted the losing run. The new players need further time to gel and a return from injury of a couple of key players including Passley and the emergence of the impressive Kader were real positives.

The Ravens travel to recently promoted Kidderminster on Saturday looking to secure those much needed three points.
