Bromley progressed through to the last sixteen of the FA Trophy with a penalty shoot out victory over National League South side Chippenham Town at a chilly Hayes Lane on Saturday afternoon.
The Ravens went into the game with a strong team, the only major change being Teddy Sharman-Lowe coming into the side in goal and they lined up in the usual 5-3-2 formation.
The game got off to a cagey start with Chippenham looking to pass the ball out from the back and Bromley choosing to sit off and not be pulled out of shape.
Jude Arthurs had the first effort of the game when he fired over and he was then involved in the opening goal of the tie when he found an opening and played in Besart Topalloj who found Ben Krauhaus on the edge of the area for the young midfielder to crash the ball high into the net for 1-0 on 16 minutes.
Myles Weston went close with a half volley from a Teddy Sharman-Lowe long ball soon after as Bromley looked to extend their lead and Michael Cheek headed a Josh Passley cross over the bar, before The Bluebirds regained their shape.
Chippenham’s first attempt on goal came late in the half when the impressive Craig Fasanmade set up Will King who shot side from just outside the area.
The second half saw Chippenham look to be more attack minded with Fasanmade going close early on and they drew level just after the hour when Tyreke Johnson and Freddie Grant combined on the left to set up Fasanmade who nipped in between the static home defence and converted at the far post for 1-1.
The Bluebirds then had a good spell and made Bromley look ragged for a while, but the home side eventually settled and went close when Olufela Olomola had a shot saved by Will Henry, Aaron Amadi-Holloway clearing the rebound to safety.
With the game stretched Olomola and Arthurs went close for Bromley while at the other end Chippenham had shout for handball in the area waived away when Luke Hanies’ shot hit Arthurs in the area.
In injury time Louis Dennis volleyed over with the final attempt of the game, but with no further scoring the tie went to penalties.
In the shoot out Cheek, Olomola, Arthurs and Topalloj all converted for Bromley, while after McClure and Spokes had scored for Chippenham, Sharman-Lowe saved Owen-Evans’ penalty and Bradbury fired over, which saw Andy Woodman’s side progress to the next round.
Bromley return to National League action next week when they entertain Boreham Wood at Hayes Lane.
