Bromley’s poor form in the month of March continued at Hayes Lane on Tuesday night as they were comprehensively outclassed by an impressive Dover team who look to be mounting a strong play off bid.
The Ravens lined up with a makeshift back four and tried out a new 4-3-3 formation and after a cagey start they had a good spell of pressure with Bradley Goldberg spurning the best chance when he shot straight at Mitchell Walker after good work by Pierre Joseph-Dubois.
Dover then came into things and started to push Bromley back Tom Murphy forced a great save from Joe Welch with a powerful volley, James Rogers fired over and Murphy shot wide after good work by Moses Ademola.
The visitors break through came on 26 minutes when Ademola showed great control on the edge of the box and finished well past Welch for 0-1.
Murphy forced another save from Welch soon after with Bromley only creating one chance on the break when Goldberg’s effort was saved by Walker.
Dover virtually killed the game on just before the break when Adwemola crossed for Richard Orlu who headed home at the far post for 0-2 on 42 minutes.
The second half was quiet for long spells with Dover comfortably containing any attacking threat from a disjointed looking Bromley.
Welch saved bravely at the feet of Ademola, a challenge for which the lively winger was booked, before the wide man enjoying his first start in some time also had a header saved by the home keeper soon after.
Murphy missed a great opportunity to extend Dover’s lead when firing wide after being clear through then over running the ball, but the visitors were soon three up when Barry Cogan converted a penalty following a foul on himself on 73 minutes, thundering the ball into the roof of the net.
Elliott Charles went close late on before Murphy completed the scoring in injury time with a fantastic finish past Welch following a strong run down the left.
Ricky Modeste nearly made it five before the final whistle saved Mark Goldberg’s side from any further humiliation.
Bromley now resemble the marathon runner who has lead the race for 20 miles with some style, but has suddenly hit ‘the wall’ and exhausted can barely put one foot in front of the other.
As he desperately tries to keep going he can hear the footsteps of the approaching pack and he knows that just before the line he will be caught and finish out of the medals.
Injuries and suspension have hit at the cruellest time as those with bigger budgets and squads just begin to get going.
