Bromley suffered FA Cup heartbreak on Saturday afternoon at Hayes Lane as they conceded an injury time goal in extra time that knocked them out of the competition against fellow National League side Yeovil Town.
The game got off to an open start, with half chances at either end from set pieces, Bromley going closest when Reeco Hackett volley narrowly wide from a corner.
The visitors picked up two early yellow card as they tried to stamp their authority on the match and both sides had close chances that were ruled offside.
Then Yeovil started to have the better if things as they pressed Bromley back, Rhys Murphy, Charlie Allen and Matt Warburton were all just off target and Harry Kyprianou made a superb tackle to deny Lawson D’Ath.
Former Bromley striker Joe Quigley and his strike partner Murphy worked tirelessly up top and caused The Ravens lots of problems, while the impressive Albu Skendi saw a goal bound shot deflect wide off Chris Bush.
From the resulting corner Ben Williamson cleared a Lee header off the line and Mark Cousins then made a superb save from a Lee header after another set piece.
Just before the break with Bromley completely under the cosh Quigley crossed for Murphy who headed over when well placed, but The Ravens held on for half time.
The second half saw Yeovil start on top again, Warburton hit the bar with a volley from another Quigley knock down.
Neil Smith brought on Billy Bingham in midfield and initially Bromley rallied, but Alex Bradley forced another save from Cousins, who then went on to foil Quigley diving bravely at his feet.
Just after the hour The Ravens were reduced to ten men when Harry Forster was red carded for a foul on Luke Wilkinson, his challenge deemed to be reckless and late, he’d been lucky to escape a card after a similar challenge early in the half.
After going down to ten men Bromley rallied though, the introduction of Jack Holland giving them much needed leadership.
Frankie Raymond hit the post from a corner and Michael Cheek put the rebound over when well placed on the six yard box.
Yeovil battled back using the extra man advantage by keeping the ball well, Lee fired wide from a corner, Warburton had two shots saved by Cousins and Bradley headed over a superb cross from Carl Dickinson.
Cheek saw a great chance cleared by Morgan Williams on a rare attack by Bromley, while at the other end Joe Kizzi did well to deny Murphy. Late on Kory Roberts played Cheek in with a great pass, but Cheek put his chance narrowly wide of the of the far post when it looked like he would score.
In injury time Yeovil pressed again, Quigley had a header saved, Warburton fired over from distance and Wilkinson drove over, but it remained scoreless.
With the game goalless we headed into extra time and The Ravens started the livelier, but it was Lee who had the best chance volleying wide for the visitors.
Cheek then had another superb chance for Bromley when he dispossessed Lee and beat Glovers Keeper Adam Smith only for Williams to slide in and clear his goal bound shot to safety.
Just before the break Cousins made an excellent one handed save under the bar from Murphy after a great ball from Lee.
The second half of of extra time saw the match become edgier and very physical with the lenient Referee letting lots of challenges go, James Alabi had a shot saved as he latched on to a great cross from Kizzi, but as both sides tired and Bromley tried to run the clock down for penalties there was one more chance to be had.
Bradley fired In a shot from the right, which hit Bromley sub Nassim L’Ghoul and went out for a corner.
From the resulting set piece Cousins punched the ball out to the edge of the box, but Gabriel Rogers met it with a superb volley that gave him no chance and landed in the bottom left hand corner of the net to give Yeovil and injury time winner.
The manner of the defeat was hard to take for Neil Smith’s men, but in truth it was no more than Yeovil deserved given they had dominated the game and were only held at bay for two hours by the superb goalkeeping of Mark Cousins.
The Ravens will have to wait at least 76 years now to make it to the second round of the cup, while Yeovil will look to this result to kick start their season.
