Bromley continued their unbeaten run dating back to mid-September with a hard fought and entertaining goalless draw with Halifax Town at Hayes Lane on Saturday afternoon, although they could have won it but for a Michael Cheek missed penalty in the second half.
Bromley got off to a positive start, looking to attack and play direct balls up to the front two in a 3-5-2 formation. Jude Arthurs put an early chance wide, before Halifax came into things, Jack Vale heading a good chance over for the visitors.
Bromley had a good spell of pressure with Chris Bush’s long throws causing problems, while The Shaymen always looked dangerous on the break getting the ball out wide.
Luke Coulson played in Harry Forster who had a shot deflected wide, while at the other end Matty Warburton had an effort saved by Mark Cousins.
Bromley defender Omar Sowunmi had a header saved by Sam Johnson after a good cross from Arthurs and as The Ravens pressed Johnson made a superb finger tip save from Coulson who hit a powerful shot from 20 yards out.
Late in the half Halifax had a spell of possession around The Ravens area, but they were kept at bay by the home side’s solid defence.
The second half started with the game getting more bad tempered and some late tackles going in, Arthurs appeared to be elbowed by Jack Senior as they challenged for a high ball in midfield and although he was later booked the Halifax left back lived a charmed life with the referee over all, escaping sanction for various fouls including this challenge.
The pace slowed in the game around the hour mark, but after Jordan Slew and Kieran Green had efforts saved by Cousins, Bromley were given a great opportunity to take the lead.
A Bush free kick came back off the wall and the ball eventually fell to Cheek whose driven effort into the box was blocked by a defenders hand and Referee Matthew Russell awarded a penalty to The Ravens.
With most home fans expecting the club’s top scorer to convert the golden chance there was an audible gasp around Hayes Lane and Cheek dragged his spot kick wide of the goal via the foot of the post and possibly Johnson’s finger tips Halifax seized the chance of the let off by pressing for a winner themselves, Elliot Newby had a shot saved by Cousins and Slew fired wide after an impressive spell of possession, but Bromley held out.
Late on The Ravens rallied for one more spell of pressure, but after a penalty shout for a foul on Cheek was turned down, following hood work by Haji Mnoga, and a series of long throws from Bush were cleared, the final whistle signaled an end to this enthralling yet scoreless draw.
The Ravens slip one place to seventh in the National League table ahead of their trip to Woking on Tuesday night, while Halifax remain fourth.
