Two victories in quick succession under trying circumstances have given Welling United a big boost ahead of their trip to Bristol Rovers.
First they defeated an extremely robust FC Halifax Town and then they travelled to Braintree Town and claimed three points that pulled them five points clear of the relegation zone.
Jake Gallagher and Joe Healy returned from suspension to play at Braintree but the plaudits should go to the back four who defended so well that Benji Buchel only had one routine shot on target. The oldest of the four defenders was 19 years old whilst young development squad defender Joey Taylor made his Vanarama Conference Premier debut.
On Saturday, Jamie Day may have the luxury of having to make selection decisions as Chris Bush and Jamal Fyfield return from their bans. Ben Jefford is making progress from injury but there should not be the need to rush him back.
Rovers achieved their best league result of the season on Tuesday when defeating leaders Barnet 2-1 with a last minute winner. The result left them in fourth place, still eight points behind their visitors but with a game in hand.
At home they have an excellent record having won seven, drawn three and lost just once against Forest Green Rovers.
There has only been one previous meeting between the two clubs, an F.A. Cup tie in the late nineties when Bristol Rovers enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win.
Although the hosts will start as short priced favourites, Welling have showed resolve to battle against the odds and Charlie Penny will be hoping to add to the two winners he netted against Halifax and Braintree.
