Gillingham seem set to introduce some fresh faces into the side for Good Friday’s League Two clash at Bristol Rovers.
Both Danny Spiller and Rowan Vine are in contention for a place in the starting eleven having come off the bench and impressed against Macclesfield last weekend with the latter scoring a brace at Folkestone Invicta on Monday night.
With striker Jo Kuffour to miss the game against his former club with a knee injury, Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler has to decide whether to stick with the more attacking 4-4-2 formation, or revert back to the 4-5-1 system he’s played away from home at times this season.
A clean sheet against Macclesfield almost guarantees that the back four will remain the same with Simon King having a late fitness test to see if he can take his place on the bench.
Charlie Lee is still ruled out with a knee injury and will have to wait for the Dagenham & Redbridge game on Easter Monday at the earliest.
Gavin Tomlin is still another week or so away from being fit and couldn’t have faced his parent side on Monday anyway.
Long term absentees Barry Fuller (ankle), Garry Richards (fractured leg), Callum Davies (hand), Adam Birchall, Curtis Weston and Ross Flitney (all knee) will all miss the game, although the latter pair are expected to be fit in time for the last few games of the season.
Meanwhile, winger Jordan Obita returned to Championship side Reading after his loan spell ended, so places on the bench could be up for grabs.
Therefore, The Gills could line up like this: Gazzaniga, Fish, Essam, Frampton, Martin, Whelpdale, J Payne, Montrose, Spiller, Jackman, Kedwell.
Subs: Evans, O Lee, Oli, Vine, Miller.
As for Bristol Rovers, they will include Mustapha Carayol in their matchday squad.
Carayol was substituted at half-time during the Pirates’ goalless draw at league leaders Swindon last time out with a minor hamstring problem, but the move was only precautionary and the winger has trained this week in the lead-up to the clash. Rovers manager Mark McGhee has no new injury or suspension worries ahead of the match, with defender Adam Virgo the only long-term absentee. Virgo’s knee ligament problem is likely to keep the former Brighton man out until the end of the season. Wayne Brown is back in training after his ankle injury but the midfielder’s target is to return before the end of the season and he is unlikely to feature. Andy Hessenthaler has stated he’d like at least four points from the two Easter games, but surely a win against the Pirates would go a long way to keeping their play-off hopes alive.
