New Charlton boss, Karl Robinson, watched his side notch five goals at the Memorial Ground on Tuesday evening.
Robinson is expected to be unveiled as the club’s new manager in the next 24 hours or so. He must be delighted at his team’s new found momentum.
Kevin Nugent maintained his 100% record, and ends his stint as caretaker
Manager with a goal difference of 7-1.
Nugent made two changes to the team that beat Port Vale on Saturday, Dillon Phillips replaced hip injury victim Declan Rudd, and Adam Chicksen was on the left of midfield, with Johnnie Jackson dropping to the bench.
The Rovers’ ground staff done a fantastic job, the pitch was in excellent condition even though Bristol was flooded on Monday.
Despite the score line, Phillips had to be on his toes, particularly in the first half. He was called on to tip over a Rory Gaffney effort, and one stop to foil Matty Taylor was breathtaking, albeit the striker was subsequently adjudged to have handled the ball.
Ademola Lookman opened the scoring with an absolute screamer after 26 minutes, when he was teed up by Josh Magennis.
A minute before the break, Lookman returned the favour. He dinked a clever little ball to Chicksen who nudged it along for Magennis to apply the finishing touch.
The Pirates made a double substitution at the break, but to no avail. Five minutes after the restart, Patrick Bauer rose to thunder home a Lookman corner.
Darrrell Clark made his final change seven minutes later, but the Pirates were reduced to ten men after 65 minutes. Jake Clarke-Salter fell awkwardly and dislocated his shoulder.
Chicksen drilled in the fourth from the edge of the box after 77 minutes, and Ajose added the fifth five minutes from time.
Phillips was booked in stoppage time for bringing Gaffney down. Taylor converted the penalty, but it was no more than a consolation for the Pirates.
Nugent will be delighted with his caretaker stint and is keen to continue as Robinson’s assistant.
It was a game that will long live in the memory of the 411 travelling fans. It is nights like this that make all the miles and hours on the motorways worthwhile.
