98 days after Callum Harriott’s hat-trick at Bloomfield Road, the Addicks will kick-off the new campaign at Griffin Park on Saturday.
Much has changed over the summer, Charlton are very much a work in progress, their squad is not yet complete and head coach, Bob Peeters, is new to management in England.
Ironically, his predecessor, Jose Riga, is now in the Blackpool hot seat and hat-trick hero Harriott, is unlikely to be fit for the match at Brentford.
Blackpool will clearly have a difficult season despite Riga’s undoubted ability. Leeds look to be another side who have plenty of problems behind the scenes too.
The Addicks are tipped to have a tough season by many pundits, as are Saturday’s opponents, Brentford.
Like Charlton, the Bees may surprise a few doubters. Mark Warburton took over from Uwe Rossler seamlessly, and with the momentum promotion brings, plus some new signings, Brentford will looking to finish in the top half of the table.
The Addicks will be staying in a hotel overnight, so will not have to deal with the London traffic before the game.
Peeters is likely to start with newcomer, Stephen Henderson, in goal. Nick Pope will provide cover from the bench.
Peeters has said that Chris Solly’s knee will need managing but the two time Player Of The Year is likely to be in the starting line-up. Rhoys Wiggins will be at left-back with Michael Morrison and Tal Ben Haim the probable central defensive partnership.
If the knock he picked up at Peterborough does sideline Harriott, Peeters will have a decision to make about the wide left berth.
Franck Moussa would be the obvious replacement but he has not featured since the beginning of last month. He is back in training and will probably get a place on the bench.
Peeters played Wiggins ahead of Fox on the left at Peterborough and has also used Jordan Cousins in the position.
Johann Gudmundsson is naturally left-footed, so he could play there with Lawrie Wilson coming in on the right, but Peeters seems to prefer playing Gudmundsson on the right.
Yoni Buyens and skipper, Johnnie Jackson, will be the engine roomers.
The Andy Delort saga rumbles on and rumours are again surfacing about interest in Kansas City’s former Norwich striker, Dom Dwyer.
However, at the moment, Peeters has George Tucudean, Igor Vetokele, Simon Church and Joe Pigott to choose from.
Church experienced a difficult first season at The Valley and Pigott has had just two starts at this level, so Peeters will probably opt for the two newcomers.
Charlton could look like this:
Henderson; Solly, Ben Haim, Morrison, Wiggins; Gudmundsson, Buyens, Jackson, Cousins; Tucudean, Vetokele.
Subs: Pope, Gomez, Bikey, Fox, Wilson, Moussa, Church.
The referee will be James Adcock from Nottinghamshire.
Charlton have three away games in August. As well as Brentford, they will have to visit Huddersfield and Brighton at the end of the month.
Sandwiched between will be tough home games with Wigan and Derby, so the Addicks will face three sides who will expect to be in the promotion shake up in their first five games.
Brentford and Huddersfield may be the games that Peeters believes offer him the best chances of winning.
