It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t a classic but it was three points for Charlton at Brentford on Saturday.
Uwe Rossler’s Brentford team showed bags of endeavour, had a couple of really good chances, but the one quality move of the match won the game.
A sickening collision between Richard Lee and Shaleum Logan saw the latter stretchered off. As a consequence, ten minutes of added time was played, with a further three added on due to a further incident with Ben Hamer.
Niall McGinn struck the post but when the rebound came to Clayton Donaldson, he blasted the ball over the bar. Donaldson had another chance shortly after but headed wide from six yards.
There was a serious incident early in the second half. Wright-Phillips was through on goal and as he lobbed the keeper, there was a sickening collision between Richard Lee and Shaleum Logan. After a lengthy stoppage in which he received treatment from Charlton’s club doctor, John Fraser, physio Erol Umut, as well as the Brentford medical staff, Logan was stretchered off.
Shortly after the resumption, the best move of the match, sealed the three points for the Addicks. Yann Kermorgant swept the ball out to Green who fired in a low, hard cross that was impossible to defend. Danny Hollands just failed to connect but Wright-Phillips slid in behind him to apply the finishing touch.
Charlton also lost a player when Johnnie Jackson was sent crashing into the perimeter hoardings by Rhoys Wiggins. Jackson aggravated his troublesome hamstring and will have a scan on Monday.
Charlton saw the game out though tempers threatened to boil over at the end. At the final whistle, the players showed their appreciation of the support they had been given by the fans.
