Thrill-seekers young and old are being challenged to take on Europe’s tallest blow-up slide when Britain’s biggest obstacle course comes to Kent for the first time this weekend.
A giant ball pit, the world’s largest bouncy inflatable and foam-filled labyrinth are just some of the ten tricky obstacles awaiting runners when Brands Hatch welcomes Gung-Ho!’s Seriously Fun 5k on Saturday 4th June.
The Total Wipeout-style course, suitable for adults and children alike, will certainly end on a high as participants take a trip down the 200ft-long ‘Thriller’ – a slide taller than THREE double decker buses.
While keen runners may aim to complete the course in a personal best time, people of all ages, shapes, sizes and levels of fitness are invited to give it a go individually or as part of a team.
The fun-filled 5k is the brainchild of CBeebies presenter Alex Winters, who will also host the event. He is looking forward to its Kent debut and raising as much money as possible for charity.
Alex said: “I came up with the idea after watching Ninja Warrior with my kids – they were saying how great it would be to do something like that.
“I immediately thought of It’s a Knockout, Takeshi’s Castle, Total Wipeout – TV shows that I and other people love but are never going to be able to take part in. I thought: ‘What if there was something like them available for the public, something everyone could do?’.”
In its first year, 2015, Gung-Ho! held three events nationwide with thousands of people taking part each time, raising tens of thousands of pounds for good causes in the process through sponsorship and on-the-day collections.
Alex, 39, added: “It is great that we can help raise money for charities as well. You see so many charities nowadays because so many parts of society need help.
“Gung-Ho! is a great opportunity for people to have great fun and raise money for important causes at the same time – and anyone can do it.
“At our event in Windsor last year a disabled girl went round the course on a tricycle and her dad helped her over the obstacles. That sums up everything Gung-Ho! is about.”
The event takes place on a field just yards from the world famous motor racing circuit graced by legends such as Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna.
With such a fantastic location, Alex and his team are hoping to make this their biggest event yet.
The father-of-three said: “The first three events started up a bit of a buzz for us and we want to keep it going and get even more runners this year.
“You don’t get a lot of family-friendly events like this – with people of all ages taking part. It doesn’t matter about your level of fitness – this event is for everyone and we want to make it bigger and better than ever.
“We think the people of the Kent will really get behind us and will hopefully turn out in their droves. Brands Hatch is such an iconic location for this race and we hope everyone will have some serious fun.”
Runners, who must be at least 4ft tall, receive a free bib with race number, Gung-Ho! t-shirt and headband, while any spectators can attend for free and enjoy the food stalls and music.
