Following their disappointing August Bank Holiday weekend, Welling United put in a much better performance at Bath City.
Had they taken their chances they would have claimed all three points but their one defensive error allowed the Romans to claim a share of the points.
It was Bath’s only serious chance but Welling should have been home and dry by then having missed two one on ones and not got on the end of a host of dangerous crosses after the outstanding Harry Phipps had headed them in front.
Their hopes were hampered by losing both of their strikers, Bradley Goldberg and Tom Bradbrook, injured in the first half and neither will be available for the game at Braintree.
Jamie Coyle, Welling’s player manager, hopes that he will be able to bring someone in but the shortage of time might work against him.
Better news for him should be that Ian Gayle is expected to be fit to return against his former club so Coyle should be able to shuffle his pack.
Having suffered relegation last season, the Iron have made a good start with only one defeat, at East Thurrock United, in their first eight games under new manager Brad Quinton.
Their home form has been particularly strong with three wins and a draw. After drawing with Dartford they have beaten Chippenham Town, Hampton and Richmond Borough, and St Albans City. The latter result was particularly impressive as their visitors came into that game on the back of six straight wins.
Coyle knows what to expect and said “It’s always tough there but I think that with the confidence and belief that the boys have, we’ll be a threat again. Hopefully, we can put our chances away and kill the game off.”
