After their heroics on Saturday, Welling United’s unbeaten away record was ended with a disappointing performance at Braintree Town.
Despite going ahead, the Wings failed to build on their advantage and finished well beaten.
Early on, Amadou Kassarate clipped the back of the post with a cross before Yaser Kasim and Ade Azeez combined to create an opening for Stefan Payne, but his shot was saved by former Wing Jack Sims.
Another chance came when a deep free kick found Sid Nelson and he flicked it on, but Tom Dickens had to stretch to reach it and couldn’t turn it home.
It came as no surprise when Welling went ahead. Kassarate did well to keep it in play and crossed for Azeez and there was enough power in his header to beat Sims.
However, they only held their lead for four minutes. A deep corner picked out Baris Altintop and he powered home his header.
Kassarate had a goal-bound shot blocked before Braintree went ahead three minutes before the half time break. Levi Amantchi got in behind the Welling defence and although Kai McKenzie-Lyle beat his shot out it fell into the path of another ex-Wing, Alfie Matthews, and he made no mistake with a first-time finish.
Soon after the interval Jon Benton had a shot parried out, but nobody was able to follow up.
Although the Wings had plenty of possession at the back it ended too often with a long ball forward that either didn’t pick anyone out or didn’t stick if it did find someone.
Nearly thirty second half minutes had gone when Braintree added a third and for Welling, it was self-inflicted. McKenzie-Lyle passed it out to Manny Parry, but he was unable to control it. Lamar Reynolds nicked it away before striding away and finishing well.
Reynolds was also involved with the fourth when he burst down the wing and crossed for substitute Matt Rush to sweep it home.
Antony Papadopoulos had a low shot saved easily and Taylor Maloney fired wide of the near post from twenty-five yards, but the game was gone by then and Warren Feeney will have to pick his team up quickly ahead of Saturday’s game with Hungerford Town.
