National League North side Brackley Town will be hoping it’s a case of history repeating itself tonight as they look to dump League One side Gillingham out of the FA Cup for the second time in three years.
On that occasion, they beat the Gills 1-0 in their replay to reach the second round for the first time in their existence.
They will have another chance to replicate that feat tonight in front of the television cameras after earning a 2-2 draw in the first tie earlier this month.
18 November 2013 is a date that is sure to live in the memory of everybody associated with Brackley Town after they pulled off a big shock to knock Gillingham out of the cup.
Glenn Walker scored the winner then, and there were scenes of utter jubilation at the final whistle as players and fans celebrated their triumph.
In an incredible twist of fate, the same scenario has cropped up again this season following Brackley’s 2-2 draw at the Priestfield Stadium 10 days ago.
It will be intriguing to see if the same result will follow, but you can guarantee the League One visitors won’t be taking their opponents lightly.
Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh has praised Brackley in the lead-up to the game, and may pick a strong side to ensure his team isn’t on the end of an upset.
Some of the Gills’ best players such as Bradley Dack and Scott Wagstaff missed the first tie through injury, but are likely to be included at St James Park.
“It’s a really important fixture for us. The previous game gave us an insight into Brackley as a team, and also their personnel,” Edinburgh told the club’s official website.
“We know the expectation is for us to win, and that’s no disrespect to Brackley.
“But they led 2-0 in the first tie so we know what they’re capable of, and we know what the TV cameras are there for. We’ve got to make sure we’re not going to be that upset.”
Brackley are currently 9th in their league (National League North) which is the sixth tier of English football.
They’ve only lost twice in their division this season though, and could be higher if they’d converted more draws into wins.
A few of their players have experience of playing in the Football League, including midfielder Lee Cox who was at Stevenage last year and started his career at Leicester City.
Zimbabwe international David Moyo is another who has played at a decent level, spending three years at nearby Northampton Town, while 2013 hero Glenn Walker is still at the club.
In contract, Gillingham have been inconsistent in League One this season and currently sit it 17th place – although they will have been boosted by a 2-1 win over Northampton on Saturday.
